"episodeNarrative": "A winter storm consisting primarily of sleet impacted southeast Missouri during the late afternoon and evening on January 30th. The precipitation moved out before sunrise on the 31st. The precipitation fell quite heavily as soon as it started, and temperatures were well below freezing, so roads quickly became covered with sleet. The sleet compacted down to an icy coating, making for dangerous travel conditions. For the next few days that followed the storm, many secondary roads were ice-covered as temperatures remained well below freezing through the morning of February 2nd. There were numerous vehicle slide-offs and some accidents. Three police officers were injured in three separate crashes on the night of the 31st. A police officer in Miner (Scott County) received minor injuries when a vehicle bounced off a guard rail and into his police cruiser. In Mississippi County, another officer was injured seriously when a semi truck travelling northbound on Interstate 57 crashed into his cruiser, which was parked at a crash scene. Interstate 57 was closed due to the crashes. Another officer was injured on U.S. Highway 60 near Poplar Bluff when a semi rig slid into a tow truck, which then slid into his police cruiser. All lanes of U.S. Highway 60 were closed for several hours due to multiple jackknifed semis. Interstate 55 was also extremely icy and strewn with wrecked vehicles. The Missouri State Highway Patrol troop serving southeast Missouri reported they responded to several dozen crashes and over 100 calls for service. Schools were cancelled in most counties from January 30th through February 2nd. The heaviest sleet accumulations occurred along and north of a line from Doniphan and Poplar Bluff to Sikeston and Charleston, or roughly the U.S. Highway 60 corridor. There was one-half to one inch of sleet in those areas. A light glaze of icing also accompanied the sleet in many areas. The wintry precipitation was lighter to the south. From one-quarter to one-half inch of sleet fell south of Highway 60, including New Madrid. Arctic high pressure over the central Plains pumped low-level cold air into the region on brisk northeast winds. At the same time, a southwest wind flow at 500 mb brought a moist air mass emanating from the sub-tropical Pacific.",
