Indeed, the assumption has been that our nation’s constitution is solid and prescient enough to thwart—or at the least contain—the more authoritarian impulses of citizens and elected officials alike. Donald J. Trump’s election to the presidency of the United States in 2016 has dramatically called into question this working assumption. Yet President Trump’s ascendance to executive power is more epilogue than prologue to the inclusivity of American democracy. In the decades leading to Trump’s momentous election, there were already countless signs of democracy displaying illiberal tendencies in the United States.2020-09-135eda57c27a5c4b0019b478d1Virtual Meeting[]2020-09-10PUBLISHED2020 APSA Annual Meeting: Democracy, Difference, and Destabilization—

The answers to what these global shifts mean for governments, nations, communities and individuals are neither straightforward nor obvious, and the tools necessary to examine them are varied and expansive. More than ever, political science is positioned to address pressing questions of this moment and beyond, provided we embrace and promote the rich intellectual pluralism of our discipline – in methodology, methods, behavior, institutions, and perspective. In addition, we recognize that the diversity of our scholars in terms of racial and ethnic background, nationality, gender, sexuality, and gender expression, institutions and professional career stage contributes to knowledge and ways of understanding the world. Climate Exp0 is part of the official All4Climate Pre-COP programme and will showcase the latest thinking and most relevant international research relevant to decisions being made at COP26 in November around five key themes. Free to attend and open to all, Climate Exp0 will harness the power of virtual collaboration to maximise inclusivity and accessibility while minimising environmental impact and carbon footprint – providing a global stage at which policymakers, academics, practitioners, students and members of the public can gather together to collaborate, share and debate climate change science and policy.2021-05-215fa3076a06bec10012807eaaOnline[{"asset":{"fileName":"cop26 universities network updated.png","fileSizeBytes":34664,"id":"609c4f8bc3ff06e67a671029","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4f75e519e3d05575a5e3/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4f75e519e3d05575a5e3/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4f75e519e3d05575a5e3/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4f75e519e3d05575a5e3/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"609c4f75e519e3d05575a5e3","text":"COP26 Universities Network","url":"https://www.gla.ac.uk/research/cop26/"},{"asset":{"fileName":"logo RUS_int (1).png","fileSizeBytes":196100,"id":"609c4fb2c3ff06e67a671388","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fa4f3923b318fc44046/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fa4f3923b318fc44046/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fa4f3923b318fc44046/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fa4f3923b318fc44046/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"609c4fa4f3923b318fc44046","text":"RUS: Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo sostenibile","url":"https://reterus.it/en/"},{"asset":{"fileName":"UKRI-Logo_Horiz-RGB-768x226.png","fileSizeBytes":13684,"id":"609c4fc7c3ff06e67a67152b","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fbd48135918bf524a13/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fbd48135918bf524a13/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fbd48135918bf524a13/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/609c4fbd48135918bf524a13/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"609c4fbd48135918bf524a13","text":"UKRI: UK Research and Innovation","url":"https://www.ukri.org/"},{"asset":{"fileName":"ALL4CLIMATE - This VI edition of the WSMPI is organized in collaboration with IMPA and ESALq, two highly regarded research institutions in Brazil. IMPA located in Rio de Janeiro, is well-known worldwide for research in Mathematics and ESALq is highly praised for research in agribusiness. The WSMPI is organized around the same format of the original Oxford SGI´s. Groups are formed voluntarily around each problem, are encouraged to work on different approaches for the same problem. The vast majority of the participants are graduate students from graduate programs around Brazil and they have been mainly applied mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists. The workshops have sometimes attracted participants from neighboring countries in South America. A written report has been provided for most of the problems presented in the five previous editions of the WSMPI. There is an annual ESGI event in the UK that is hosted by a different university each year. The School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds hosted ESGI 162 in July 2020 with the support of the Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS). This was the first virtual ESGI event and attracted participants from around the world, who worked on eight industry problems.2020-07-2460907c8a2a6566f2dcb43b91University of Leeds, via online meeting[]2020-07-20SUBMISSION_OPENEDESGI162, Leeds—

During the workshop, engineers and scientists from industry interact with the academic participants on problems of interest to their companies. Problems are drawn from many areas of industrial practice, including: engineering and product design, process design and control, analysis of datasets, scheduling and optimization, environmental remediation, financial modeling. In the 2021 workshop, which was held online, three companies presented their problems. Their topics were: Evaporation from porous media (by W.L. Gore, Inc.), Utilizing clinical data to predict the severity of presentation of chronic lung diseases (by Vironix Health, Inc.), and Mathematical techniques to ensure privacy in large-scale travel behavior datasets (by Resource Systems Group, Inc.). The states vary greatly in their support and investment in institutional designs and behaviors that are intended to strengthen democracy. We invite substantive politics, policy, management, and methods papers, posters and roundtables that promote our understanding of public policy and politics as well as strengthening access to and positive impacts for citizens from policy and politics. Faculty from the FSU Departments of Political Science and the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy will join to organize panels and posters. In addition, a mini conference on Identity Politics in the States will be included on Saturday afternoon after lunch; the mini conference will culminate with a dinner that evening. That meeting will be organized by Prof. Mirya Holman from Tulane University, Rebecca Kreitzer of UNC-Chapel Hill and members of the faculty at FSU. https://coss.fsu.edu/sppc2022/2022-04-23623de2cbab0051d44798fa74Tallahassee, FL[]2022-04-21PUBLISHED2022 State Politics and Policy Conference—

Mallinson, Julia Marin Hellwege, Davin Phoenix, J. Cherie Strachan -- Pursuing a graduate degree in political science is the first step in pursuing an academic or alt-academic career. Yet there is a large hidden curriculum in graduate school (pertaining strategies, norms, and practices that, when implemented, can help students navigate graduate school) that can be difficult to learn and navigate, even for the most successful undergraduate students and early career professionals who are beginning their graduate career. Beyond gaining entry to graduate school, surviving, and thriving as a graduate student, success requires insights into academia and political science that most undergraduates, recent college graduates or early career professionals simply will not know. Additionally, lack of access to this hidden curriculum most disadvantages first generation and minoritized students, which maintains inequalities in the discipline. Presently, the APSA leadership is increasing its efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion across the profession by addressing issues of climate, culture, and institutional and systemic inequality through a variety of measures: diversity and inclusion programming, presidential task forces and other council-backed initiatives. While this work is ongoing, this resource guide will attempt to fill the knowledge-gap for prospective and current graduate students, providing insights into everything from applying for admission and finding a mentor, to landing that first job – and everything in between.—6219016ac45c0b4ad71c3fec—[]—PUBLISHEDStrategies for Navigating Graduate School and Beyond—

The COVID-19 deadly virus amply upset the balance in higher education, causing universities to suddenly shift to online formats, close campuses, or cease operations. Students, isolated or sent home for remote learning, experienced the consequences acutely and directly. Faculty, separated from colleagues and support staff, pivoted to online course delivery or socially-distanced, in-person teaching methods. Academic conferences were delivered on virtual platforms or canceled altogether, depriving scholars of the ability to exchange ideas face-to-face, a critical part of what we do. Other challenges have preceded or emerged contemporaneously with this pandemic—in particular, how to conduct research in a more transparent way and the rapidly changing world of academic publishing with the move towards open access. Yet, there are also myriad opportunities and lessons learned to restructure political science as we approach the post-pandemic era.2022-09-185eda57c27a5c4b0019b478d1Montreal, Quebec, Canada[]2022-09-15PUBLISHED2022 APSA Annual Meeting: Rethink, Restructure, and Reconnect—

Groups of mathematicians worked on problems that were brought in from practice. While the first four problems came from actual companies the fifth one was from artist Zoro Feigl. For all cases, however, mathematics proved to be an essential contribution to the solution. During SWI, groups of mathematicians with different backgrounds worked with the “problem suppliers” on the different problems. These were open-ended in the sense that no mathematical modeling had taken place, which left room for different approaches to formulate a problem in mathematical terms. After the problems were presented on Monday, five teams with specialists from various fields of mathematics were formed and set to work. This collaboration proved to be highly effective, being able to produce different approaches or solving different subproblems within only one week. Besides the scientific expertise, constant contact to the problem suppliers was crucial for such targeted research. Each group worked very intensively and enthusiastically until on Friday the developed solutions could be presented to the industrial partners.2022-01-2860907c8a2a6566f2dcb43b91University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands[{"asset":{"fileName":"nwo.png","fileSizeBytes":83074,"id":"642dbfcad5fd2603cab17f82","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbf9f736114c963f8ff15/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbf9f736114c963f8ff15/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbf9f736114c963f8ff15/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbf9f736114c963f8ff15/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"642dbf9f736114c963f8ff15","text":"Dutch Research Council","url":"https://www.nwo.nl"},{"asset":{"fileName":"pwn.png","fileSizeBytes":32365,"id":"642dc057d5fd2603cab198fd","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbfe4736114c963f9005f/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbfe4736114c963f9005f/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbfe4736114c963f9005f/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dbfe4736114c963f9005f/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"642dbfe4736114c963f9005f","text":"Platform wiskunde nederland ","url":"https://platformwiskunde.nl"},{"asset":{"fileName":"4tuami.png","fileSizeBytes":27961,"id":"642dc050d5fd2603cab19738","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc0260784a63aee97938a/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc0260784a63aee97938a/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc0260784a63aee97938a/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc0260784a63aee97938a/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"642dc0260784a63aee97938a","text":"4TU.AMI ","url":"https://www.4tu.nl/ami"},{"asset":{"fileName":"ut.png","fileSizeBytes":11991,"id":"642dc04bd5fd2603cab19665","largeThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc031736114c963f90349/largeThumb/file.jpg"},"mediumThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc031736114c963f90349/mediumThumb/file.jpg"},"mimeType":"image/png","original":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc031736114c963f90349/original/file.png"},"smallThumbnail":{"url":"https://www.cambridge.org/engage/api-gateway/coe/assets/orp/resource/event_sponsor/642dc031736114c963f90349/smallThumb/file.jpg"}},"id":"642dc031736114c963f90349","text":"University of Twente","url":"https://www.utwente.nl"}]2022-01-24SUBMISSION_OPENEDStudy Group Mathematics with Industry SWI 2022—

The VIII edition of the WSMPI was organized in collaboration with IMPA a highly regarded research institution in Brazil. IMPA located in Rio de Janeiro, is well-known worldwide for research in Mathematics. A written report has been provided for most of the problems presented in the seven previous editions of the WSMPI. Given the potentially pernicious and polarizing effects of mis- and disinformation, how can we conceive of and undertake helpful research and scholarship? More specifically, how can we rethink complex governance structures and grapple with the reality of power dynamics in an accurate and critical way, while taking a diversity of voices, perspectives and methodological approaches into consideration? As mis- and disinformation blur the lines between individuals, governments, and big tech, we stand to see fundamental political circumstances shift. For example, the Russian invasion of Ukraine underscores the changing nature of information on the battlefield; our reliance on satellite technology reveals key vulnerabilities for the future of political communication and how we disseminate “the truth,” but also how we frame, persuade, and argue; and democratic backsliding across the world challenges citizens’ abilities to be empowered with authentic information and veracity in order to protest–another key human right. Political scientists across subfields and methodological orientations need to be a key part of examining these phenomena to provide theoretical and evidence-based insight on the potential impact of dis-information and misinformation upon political behavior, attitudes, institutions and rights and responsibilities in the 21st century.   2023-09-035eda57c27a5c4b0019b478d1Los Angeles, CA[]2023-08-31PUBLISHED2023 APSA Annual Meeting: Rights and Responsibilities in an Age of Mis- and Disinformation—

The Study Group Mathematics with Industry (SWI) is a combined industrial–academic week-long workshop. Roughly seventy mathematicians, ranging from PhD students to full professors, work in groups on problems submitted by companies. Companies present a selection of problems on Monday. The participants devote the entire week to studying these problems in smaller groups, and present their results on Friday.2023-02-0360907c8a2a6566f2dcb43b91University of Groningen[]2023-01-30SUBMISSION_OPENEDESGI170, Groningen—

These desiderata constitute the aspirational promises of democracy. However, the institutions and cultures that make good on these promises tend to surge back and forth. This year’s conference theme focuses on the perils and promises of the democratic project over time: how to understand backsliding, defining and meeting threats, renovating institutions and practices, and imagining new ones.2024-09-085eda57c27a5c4b0019b478d1Philadelphia, PA[]2024-09-05PUBLISHED2024 APSA Annual Meeting: Democracy: Retrenchment, Renovation, & Reimagination—

We seek contributions from practitioners, researchers and theorists addressing the profound transformations driven by digital technologies, such as 3D printing, robotics, and autonomous systems. The symposium aims to generate discussions on design-driven, innovative construction for regenerative architecture that integrates biological principles into architectural and material practices, generating positive environmental impacts. It focuses on exploring the intersections between bio-integrated architecture and advanced computational design processes. We are particularly interested in implementation strategies, scaling-up current state-of-the-art, and translating research into practical applications. Additionally, we seek practitioners who adopt an integrated approach, where function, design, fabrication, and computation are seamlessly intertwined into a unified design strategy and workflow. The event will showcase novel projects and research in sustainable building construction, computational design, robotic fabrication, and material innovation such as the characterisation of responsiveness properties of biomaterials or the use of mycelium in high performance environments. 2025-03-30678129276dde43c908020c23—[]2025-01-10PUBLISHEDTowards Integrative Design: Bio-Inspired and Digitally Fabricated—

The field of state politics and policy produces a significant amount of research that is directly relevant for policy makers and the general public. The discipline articulates the findings of this scholarship through numerous channels to non-scholarly audiences and public officials. We encourage papers and panel ideas that explore these channels and investigate how to more effectively connect state politics research to governmental practice. https://www.umassd.edu/sppc2025/2025-05-23623de2cbab0051d44798fa74Boston, MA[]2025-05-21PUBLISHED2025 State Politics and Policy Conference—

DuBois famously opined that the problem of the 20th century was the problem of the color line. Today, while problems associated with racial identity remain salient, divisions based on partisanship, ideology, ethnicity, gender, nation, class, religion, and generation have also come to define the polarization we see in public opinion, political behavior, and governing institutions across the globe. These cleavages are exacerbated by widespread propaganda: misinformation, and disinformation campaigns from various political actors and groups that sow confusion about basic facts, fuel distrust in institutions, activate negative stereotypes, and generally undermine efforts to build more just, inclusive and well-ordered societies. Amid this growing distrust and a resurgence of nativism and authoritarianism, the scale and scope of problems that require collective discussion, decision-making, and action grow at a seemingly accelerating pace. Whether it be climate change, forced migration, wealth inequalities, global pandemics, inter- and intra-state conflict, nations across the planet are faced with dire, if not existential, threats to the lives and livelihoods of their citizens. Yet, weakened political institutions, captured bureaucracies, fractured civil societies, and a “post-truth” politics have hamstrung the ability of democracies everywhere to effectively address these challenges and have undercut efforts to counter the rise of illiberalism and populism in our politics. What can political science tell us about the roots of division and disorder today? In analyzing these times of crisis, how can political science help us understand how shifts in technology, society, and the economy are restructuring politics globally? What constitutive stories of peoplehood and constructions of power might counter these roots of division and disorder? Finally, how can our tools of explanation and interpretation help us to reimagine the possibilities of politics?2025-09-145eda57c27a5c4b0019b478d1Vancouver, BC, Canada[]2025-09-11PUBLISHED2025 APSA Annual Meeting: Reimagining Politics, Power, and Peoplehood in Crisis Times—
